The tournament is named after legendary former golf player Mr. Byron Nelson. Byron Nelson was born in 1912 in Texas, America, and he is regarded as one of the finest golf players ever. Byron retired at the age of 34 and died in 2006 at the age of 94.

The inaugural tournament of AT&T Byron Nelson was held in 1944 under the name Texas Victory Open and was won by Mr. Byron Nelson. Later in 1968, the tournament was renamed Byron Nelson Golf Classic in honor of Mr. Byron Nelson.

AT&T, a well-known telecommunications company based in America, has been the sponsor of the tournament since 2015.
